In 2007, Michael Winkler from Humboldt State University in California USA used the EnergyPLAN model for analysing a county energy system for Humboldt. The study concludes that Humboldt County has sufficient renewable resources to meet all energy needs and that energy storage, flexible demand and a smart grid are needed to operate an integrated system.
